CoastWatch is offering an intensive three-day workshop on coastal science and natural history this summer, led by coastal ecologist Stewart Schultz, along with Fawn Custer, CoastWatch’s volunteer coordinator.
The workshop will be held in Depoe Bay from July 8-10, covering everything from tidepools and sandy beaches to estuarine, coastal forest, and ocean ecosystems.  Each day will include a field trip, indoor presentations and laboratory experiences. The workshops also provide an introduction to citizen science and background information on projects in which volunteers can participate.
The workshop will be especially helpful to those interested in or already engaged in shoreline monitoring through the CoastWatch program, or in other types of citizen science projects, but will be of interest to anyone who loves the coast and learning about natural history. Teachers can gain 24 Professional Development Units by attending the workshop. If you have questions about accreditation, contact Fawn Custer (contact information below).
Stewart Schultz, author of The Northwest Coast:  A Natural History, is the ideal guide to the shoreline environment.  An Oregonian who grew up playing on the shoreline near Gearhart, he went to Reed College and obtained his doctorate in botany from the University of British Columbia.  He worked on the Oregon coast for the Nature Conservancy, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, gaining wide field experience, before pursuing an academic career as a professor at the University of Miami, and now the University of Zadar in Croatia.  During the academic year he studies marine ecology, as well as his specialty of plant evolution and genetics, but every summer he returns to the Oregon coast to teach shoreline science on his home turf. If you would like a copy of Stewart's book you can order that on this site to study in advance, or you can purchase one at the workshop.
Stewart will be joined by Fawn Custer, an experienced marine educator who taught for 14 years at the Hatfield Marine Science Center.
The workshops will be be based at the Depoe Bay Community Hall, 220 SE Bay Street, Depoe Bay. Each workshop day will begin at approximately 8:30 a.m. with some adjustment for tides. Additional details will be provided to registrants

Oregon Shores membership must be current to take the member discount.  You may take the discount if joining or renewing membership while registering.  Both members of a couple paying for an Oregon Shores family membership may take the discount.

You also can pay by phone or check rather than through this site if you prefer. Call one of the numbers below, or send a check to Oregon Shores, P.O. Box 33, Seal Rock, OR  97376. If you do send a check, be sure to phone or email us right away to reserve your place.
